Beyond Limits: Discovering 3D Printing Without Sight

Where it started

I am Edis, and I am completely blind. I have been blind since I was two, so I am used to learning through sound, touch, memory and a lot of testing. That way of working has shaped how I solve problems.

When I first heard about 3D printing, the idea stayed with me. A machine could build an object one layer at a time, and I could hold the result in my hands. I could design something, print it, feel what worked, change the file and try again. For me, that made the technology feel practical straight away.

What 3D printing gives me

3D printing gives me a way to make ideas physical. That matters when you cannot rely on a screen or a render to understand a design. A printed object tells me things through my hands: whether an edge is too sharp, whether a label is readable by touch, whether a part fits, and whether the shape makes sense.

One of the projects that made this clear to me was a tactile emergency plan for my workplace. I wanted a map that could be understood without sight, with raised routes, clear symbols, text and Braille. It was not just a personal project. It showed me how a print could help other people understand a space more clearly too.

I use tools like OpenSCAD because text-based design works with the way I navigate technology. I also use a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo because the automatic calibration, app support and overall reliability make the practical side of printing easier for me. None of it removes the need to learn, but it gives me a workable starting point.

What accessibility changes

Accessibility is not something I add at the end. It changes the whole design process. I think about how an object feels, how it is described, how it can be printed, and whether someone can understand it without only looking at a photo.

That approach has helped me make tactile models, Braille objects, adapted games, signs and practical tools. Some designs are simple. Some take many versions before they feel right. The important part is that each version teaches me something.

If you are starting from zero

If you are curious about 3D printing, I would start small. Pick one simple object and learn from that. A keychain, nameplate, small bracket or basic tactile marker can teach you more than a huge project that never gets finished.

I would also choose tools that reduce unnecessary friction. Automatic bed leveling helps. Clear file names help. Good written instructions help. If you are blind or visually impaired, text-based design tools like OpenSCAD are worth exploring because the design lives in code instead of a visual workspace.

Communities can help too. 3D printing forums, local maker spaces and other makers have helped me understand materials, printer settings and design mistakes. I ask questions when I need to, and I try to give back when I can.

Where I want to take this

I want Accessible3D to be useful for people who need tactile objects, and for makers who want to think more seriously about accessibility. I want to make more learning tools, more practical models and more objects that let blind and sighted people use the same thing together.

I am still learning. That is part of the point. Every failed print, every version and every small improvement gives me a better way to design the next object.

Closing thoughts

3D printing did not make blindness disappear, and I do not need it to. What it gave me was another way to work. I can turn an idea into something I can touch, test and share.

If you are waiting until you feel ready to try something technical, I understand that feeling. I also know that you learn by starting. My first prints were not perfect, but they gave me enough information to make the next ones better.

That is still how I work: one model, one test and one improvement at a time.
