A few minutes of detail helps me give you a better quote. Before you start, it helps to think about:

  • What the item is and what it is for
  • A rough size, even about a hand's width
  • Any text that should appear on it
  • A reference image if you have one, added in a later step

Reference images, sketches, photos of something similar or examples of a style can help a lot. They are optional, but they often make the brief much clearer.

What makes a strong request

The clearest briefs usually cover five things: rough dimensions, how the item will be used, a material preference, any deadline and a reference image if you have one. You will fill these in across the next steps, and anything you are unsure about can stay blank.
