See this design in 3D

The interactive 3D preview is optional. I include the written description, photos and printed details on this page, so you do not need the preview to understand the design. It only loads when you activate it.

The 3D preview is optional. Activate the button to load it. Once it appears, use the left and right arrow keys to rotate, the up and down arrow keys to tilt, and the plus and minus keys to zoom. A Reset view button returns the camera to its starting position. A full text description and download are provided below and do not require this preview.

About this piece

I designed this chess set around touch-first play. The board uses raised cylindrical fields with a peg hole in every square, so the pieces stay in place while you explore the position by hand. The board is about 230 x 231 x 15 mm, with 25 mm fields and 10.5 mm peg holes that are 8 mm deep. I made the two sides easy to separate by touch. White pieces have a ring of raised spheres around the collar, while black pieces are smooth. The pieces have 25 mm bases and the tallest piece is about 67 mm including the peg. The board also includes accessible3d.io in raised text and Braille, because accessibility is part of the object, not something added at the end.

Why I made it this way

  • I use a peg-in-hole board so pieces stay fixed while the board is read by touch.
  • I use raised field markers so the grid can be understood without sight.
  • I give white pieces a raised sphere ring and leave black pieces smooth for fast tactile recognition.
  • I keep the design printable on standard FDM printers with PLA or similar materials.
  • I designed it for blind, visually impaired and sighted players to use together.

What arrives
